AAA laboratory testing found deteriorated headlights produced just 22% of new-headlight low-beam output—roughly 78% less in the tested headlights.
The test used headlights from two popular sedans about 11 years old. Actual loss varies by vehicle and lens condition.
≈70%
Light output restored
Professional and DIY restoration returned deteriorated headlights to approximately 70% of new-headlight output in AAA testing.
Up to 60%
Less scattered light
Separate AAA testing found restoration doubled maximum light intensity and reduced glare-producing light scatter by up to 60%.
19% fewer
Nighttime single-vehicle crashes
IIHS found vehicles with good-rated headlights had 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes than vehicles with poor-rated headlights. This shows why effective illumination matters; it is not a claim that restoration itself reduces crashes by 19%.
